Collagraph & Drypoint Printmaking course with Joanna Allen
Day 1: July 1st Plate making
The first session is spent mostly plate making, with an introduction to the collagraph process. A collagraph printing ‘plate ‘is made by gluing thin textured materials, or applying liquid materials, to a rigid surface and then ink is applied to the surface and transferred onto paper using a press. I will demonstrate how to create a collagraph ‘plate’ then the rest of the day will be spent making plate or plates, depending how prolific you are!
We will look at examples, discuss suitable collagraph materials. If weather permits we will also spend 40 mins outside drawing local architecture and landscape, to create drypoint plates. Otherwise we can work from photos and images that I can provide, or you are welcome to bring your own reference material. I can shellac your plates at the end of the session so they will be ready to print next week.
Day 2: July 8th. Printmaking
The second session we will be looking at examples of inking techniques for both collagraph and drypoint. I will demonstrate to ink a plate using oil based inks (Cranfield and Caligo safewash inks) and scrim/soft polycotton muslin.
We will then spend the rest of the day printing from our plates using a range of colour palettes to create different moods. I will also demonstrate how to use Chine Colle techniques to enhance our prints.
